The desire in my heart to share hymns played on marimba began at an early age. My first marimba teacher, a Christian, started me off playing hymns with three mallets at nine years old, and soon thereafter with four, including How Great Thou Art, O Holy Night, and eventually The Lord’s Prayer. The love and appreciation for hymns sung in church were ingrained in my heart and soul; I believe that God gave me the inspiration and the ability to express them through marimba, vibes and percussion.
What a wonderful time we live in now, when many churches blend contemporary Christian songs with keeping traditional hymn melodies alive. Hymns have staying power; the melodies and words are still relevant! May this approach to the hymns, played on instruments not traditionally used in worship, be meaningful to you. May you be blessed by the mellow and soothing sounds of the marimba and vibraphone, the energy of the percussion and the spirit in which it was crafted.
